When schools do open, they\u2019re often struggling with outdated curricula, a lack of textbooks, and teachers who are spread thin. For students, especially in rural areas, the learning gap is no longer just about what\u2019s taught in class. It\u2019s about what\u2019s not<\/strong> being taught\u2014because there simply isn\u2019t enough time, support, or infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\n<\/span>So What Can AI Do?<\/span><\/h3>\nNow, this is where things get interesting. ChatGPT<\/strong>\u2014and tools like it\u2014are like digital tutors, available 24\/7. Imagine a student in Kaduna, stuck on a math problem at 9 p.m., typing a question into their phone and getting a simple, clear explanation in seconds. Or a secondary school student in Owerri getting help drafting an essay for WAEC.<\/p>\nThese tools don\u2019t just offer answers; they offer guidance<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n- Breaking down complex topics<\/li>\n
- Practicing grammar and writing<\/li>\n
- Helping with revision for science subjects<\/li>\n
- Translating hard English into understandable explanations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
And it\u2019s not just ChatGPT. Apps like Khan Academy<\/strong>, Socratic<\/strong>, and local platforms like uLesson<\/strong> are making learning more accessible, especially for students who are self-driven.<\/p>\n
\n<\/span>But Let\u2019s Be Real\u2014There Are Limits<\/span><\/h3>\nOf course, it\u2019s not all rosy.<\/p>\n
First off, there\u2019s the issue of access<\/strong>. Not every student has a smartphone or reliable internet. In fact, many don\u2019t. And even when the tools are available, there\u2019s the risk of misuse<\/strong>\u2014students copying and pasting AI responses without truly understanding the material.<\/p>\nThen there\u2019s the human element. Can a chatbot truly replace a teacher\u2019s warmth, their stories, their intuition? Not really. At best, AI is a companion<\/strong>, not a replacement. Students still need to develop critical thinking, discipline, and emotional intelligence\u2014things no app can teach.<\/p>\n
\n<\/span>It\u2019s Already Happening\u2014Quietly<\/span><\/h3>\nHere\u2019s the thing: some students and teachers in Nigeria are already using AI tools\u2014and benefiting.<\/p>\n
I recently spoke to a teacher in Lagos who encouraged his SS3 students to use ChatGPT for revision. Not to cheat, but to explore difficult topics from different angles. \u201cIt made them curious,\u201d he said. \u201cThey came to class asking smarter questions.\u201d<\/p>\n
And a friend\u2019s niece in Benin learned how to write a better CV using ChatGPT\u2014something her school never taught her. These might seem like small wins, but they\u2019re the kind of interventions that shift mindsets and open doors.<\/p>\n
\n<\/span>What Needs to Change?<\/span><\/h3>\nIf we want more Nigerian students to benefit from AI tools, we need to lay the foundation:<\/p>\n
\n- Digital access must be prioritized<\/strong>\u2014affordable internet, subsidized devices, and infrastructure in rural schools.<\/li>\n
- Teacher training is key<\/strong>\u2014AI can\u2019t help students if educators are afraid or unsure of it.<\/li>\n
- Parental involvement<\/strong>\u2014someone has to help younger students navigate these tools responsibly.<\/li>\n
- Policy support<\/strong>\u2014EdTech should be embedded in our national strategy, not treated as an afterthought.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
\n<\/span>So, Can It Help?<\/span><\/h3>\nYes, AI tools like ChatGPT can help Nigerian students catch up<\/strong>\u2014but only if we let them. Only if we build the bridges between technology and the realities of our classrooms.<\/p>\nIt\u2019s not about replacing what we have, but enhancing it. Giving students who are already behind a fighting chance. Making knowledge available beyond school walls. And maybe, just maybe, giving a JSS3 girl in Maiduguri the same access to explanations and learning as a private school student in Lekki.<\/p>\n
We can\u2019t afford to leave our students behind. And in this digital age, we don\u2019t have to<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
